- Yes, but only if you install LED lights that are designed and tested to be compatible
with the C-Bus dimmer models you are using with them, and sometimes only if you have enlisted
the programming and commissioning services of a qualified and experienced SpaceLogic C-Bus
Systems Integrator.
- Your first choice should be to use the new 2023 SpaceLogic C-Bus 5508D1D and 5504D2D Digital Dimmers with
the highest quality dimmable LED lights you can afford. The new SpaceLogic C-Bus Digital Dimmers are
specifically designed to be able to work better with a wider range of dimmable LED lights than earlier
model dimmers (C-Bus or non-C-Bus), and may be tuned by your SpaceLogic C-Bus
Systems Integrator to obtain wider, smoother, more easily controllable dimming performance
than ever before. In other words, the electronic design of the new C-Bus 5508D1D and 5504D2D Digital Dimmers
is itself more compatible for dimming LEDs, and their new additional programmable customisation capabilities
further extend their potential dimming performance when they are professionally commissioned and programmed.
- When the dimmer and the LED light are selected and commissioned to be completey compatible, you may then enjoy
the convenience, mood control, and the energy saving benefits of dimming your lights over a wide dimming range,
in addition to enjoying the energy efficiency and potentially extended lifetime of high quality LED lights.
- If however the "dimmable" LED lights you are using are NOT specifically designed, tested, and
commissioned to be compatible with your C-Bus (or non-C-Bus) dimmers, you may find that the LED lights:
- Do not have acceptable dimming range at low levels, or they
- Flicker when the dimmer is off, or
- The LED, LED driver, and/or C-Bus dimmer may be damaged over time and may need to be replaced.
- While installing LED lights that are designed and tested to work properly with your
dimmers the first time is the best solution, if you already have installed lower quality
LED lights, or are trying to make dimmable LEDs work well with older model dimmers, then you may like to try
having your electrician wire a Load Corrective Device in parallel with your LED lights to see if this improves
their dimming performance sufficiently. Such Load Corrective Devices are designed to provide improved
dimming range, and reduced flicker when off, of low power energy-efficient lighting, by presenting a more
compatible load to the older model dimmers. Examples of such Load Corrective devices include the
Clipsal 31LCDA Load Corrective Device and the Diginet LEDsmart Load Bypass Device. More information is in the Clipsal 31LCDA Load Corrective Device installation guide and the Diginet LEDsmart Load Bypass Device Installation Guide. If you do not
achieve acceptable results by adding such Load Corrective devices, then you may consider replacing your older
dimmers with the new 2023 SpaceLogic C-Bus 5508D1D or 5504D2D Digital Dimmers, and/or replacing your LED
lights and their drivers with units that are more compatible with your C-Bus dimmers.
- You will also need to install between the minimum and the maximum number of LED lights to each
C-Bus dimmer, depending upon the LED model and the C-Bus dimmer model. This information should be included
in C-Bus dimmer compatible LED installation guides, like for example, the Clipsal L900 Series LED light installation instructions.
- You must not use ordinary non-dimmable LED lights with C-Bus
(or non-C-Bus) dimmers, as you may damage your lights and/or your dimmers, not to mention experiencing
poor dimming performance.

- Yes, energy efficient LED lights may be turned on and off with
C-Bus relays, even when they are not designed to be compatible with C-Bus or any other
type of dimmer. When using with C-Bus relays, you may install lower cost LED lights and drivers
than are required for C-Bus dimmers - but you should still install high quality LED lights
to help ensure a long trouble-free installation. Some home owners may choose to use higher
initial cost LEDs like the (now discontinued) Clipsal L900 C-Bus dimmer compatible LED down lights because of their
inbuilt thermal dimming capability, with a view to reducing subsequent service and replacement costs,
if they plan to stay in their home for many years.
- When you are replacing the small numbers of existing incandescent lights normally found in a home
with the lower power LED lights, you will probably not approach the maximum current limits of your
C-Bus relays (or non-C-Bus wall switches), which are in most cases rated at
10A, though 5A or 1A C-Bus relays may have been installed in some installations.
